Election Day 2024: How to vote in person in Washington, Maryland and Virginia

Polls in Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia are open for Election Day 2024. Here’s what you need to know to make sure you can vote in person at your polling location.

How to vote in person in DC

In Washington, D.C., Voters can vote live by completing their same-day registration or updating their information in their assigned precinct.

Same day registration:

If you are not registered, you can register at any voting center with acceptable proof of residency. Acceptable forms include: A recent bank statement or utility bill issued by DC DMV (dated within 90 days). A lease or government document with your name and address.

Recent bank statement or utility bill (less than 90 days old)

Lease or government document with your name and address

Voting process:

After providing proof of residency, you will complete a registration update form and receive a live ballot.

If proof of residence is not provided, you will vote by special ballot and must submit acceptable proof for the vote to be counted no later than 5 p.m. on the Thursday following Election Day.

How to Vote in Person in Maryland

Marylanders have the opportunity to vote in person either during early voting or on Election Day. For the 2024 Presidential General Election, early voting is Thursday, October 24, 2024 through Thursday, October 31, 2024, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. You can vote early at any early voting center in your county.

Election day:

Where: Your assigned polling location

Time: 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Important information:

You can bring one or two children under 18 with you to vote, as long as they do not disrupt the voting process.

Cell phones, pagers, cameras and computers are not permitted in early voting centers or polling locations.

You may bring printed materials, including a marked sample ballot, to assist you in voting.

New voters may be asked to show identification. Acceptable forms include: Current photo ID (e.g. Maryland driver’s license, US passport) Recent utility bill or bank statement with your name and address (dated within 3 months.)

You can wear clothing, buttons or stickers with political messages, but you must leave the polling place immediately after voting.

Write-in votes are allowed in general elections but not in primary elections. Instructions for voting in writing will be posted at polling locations.

If your employer asks for proof of voting, ask an election judge for a certificate of participation.

How to Vote in Person in Virginia

Virginia the law requires voters to present acceptable identification or sign an identity confirmation statement when voting.

Voting conditions:

Voters without acceptable identification may sign a confirmation of identity statement or vote provisionally.

Provisional voters must present identification or sign the Identity Confirmation Statement by noon on the Friday following the election for their votes to be counted.

Acceptable ID:

Check the list of acceptable forms of identification for voters before going to the polls.

Provisional voting process:

Voters without ID will receive written instructions to submit their ID or sign the Confirmation of Identity Statement after voting provisionally.

Identification documents or signed declarations may be submitted by fax, email, in person or by mail, but must be received by the local election board by noon on the Friday following the election.

Polls are open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia on Election Day, November 5.
