Google AI Previews Introduce In-App Ads to Mobile

AI previews at Google I/O.

TL;DR

  • Google’s AI Overviews feature draws on multiple sources to generate relevant answers to users’ search queries.
  • Google has started serving ads in AI Overviews to mobile users based in the United States.
  • It is unclear when and if this controversial change will expand to more markets.

Google first launched AI Overviews in May, providing eligible users with quick answers generated from multiple sources. So those residing in supported locations get concise AI-generated answers in addition to Google’s usual search results. To monetize this feature, Google is now embedding ads in AI previews on Android Phones.

Ads in Google AI Previews

Twitter user @jamesfgibbons shared a screenshot showing the new Google AI Overview ads. Land of search engines notes that this change is currently limited to mobile users in the United States. So those based in other countries or using desktops apparently won’t yet see sponsored results in the AI Previews section. Instead, the ads will continue to appear in other parts of the web page as usual.

The outlet mentions that Google could test AI Overview ads with a limited number of users. So even if you are a US-based mobile user, your AI-generated search results may continue to be ad-free. It is not yet known whether the search giant will soon deploy this addition on desktop or in more countries.

Although this type of promoted content will certainly irritate some users, advertisers may appreciate its strategic placement. Relevant ads appear directly below Google’s AI-generated results and typically include brief descriptions, eye-catching thumbnails, and price tags. This makes it difficult for affected users to miss them and may increase visits to promoted sites. If these ads are a hindrance for you, you can always disable AI previews in Google search.
