Israeli forces kill Palestinian in raid on occupied West Bank town | News from the occupied West Bank

The Health Ministry says a young man was killed and two people injured in an attack in the city of Aqqaba.

Israeli soldiers killed at least one person during a raid in the occupied West Bank city of Aqqaba, the Palestinian Health Ministry said.

The body of the Palestinian, identified as Adham Zayed Ezzat Masri, 25, was still being held by Israeli forces, the ministry said Saturday after the dawn assault.

Aqqaba is located in the north of Tubas Governorate, which is in the northwest of Palestinian territory.

The man was killed after his family home in Aqqaba was surrounded by soldiers, according to the Palestinian news agency Wafa, which also reported that a 50-year-old Palestinian man was injured in the chest after being shot by live ammunition and was transferred to hospital in critical condition.

Another 49-year-old suffered bruises, the agency said.

The director of the Tubas Palestinian Prisoners Society, Kamal Bani Odeh, said Israeli forces arrested two other men during the raid, according to Wafa.

The Israeli army sent a number of vehicles, accompanied by a bulldozer, from checkpoints east of Aqqaba to surround several houses and make arrests, sources told Al Jazeera.

They said armed clashes had broken out inside the city.

The Israeli military said it was studying the information.

Arrests amid increased violence

Israeli forces arrested at least 18 Palestinians across the occupied West Bank between Friday evening and Saturday morning, according to the Commission for Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs and the Society of Palestinian Prisoners.

Violence has increased in the region since the Gaza war began in October 2023, with almost daily sweeps by Israeli forces resulting in thousands of arrests.

Exchanges of fire also took place regularly between security forces and Palestinian fighters during Israeli army raids.

Israeli soldiers or settlers have killed more than 760 Palestinians in the West Bank during this period, according to the Ramallah-based Health Ministry.

In August, the Israeli army launched a major offensive in northern areas of the West Bank – the largest in two decades – sealing off areas including Jenin, Tulkarem and Tubas.
