Is car insurance for over 50s cheaper?

It’s possible! But car insurance premiums don’t just depend on your age and how long you’ve been on the roads. They are based on your car, its insurance group, your driving history and other factors.

There are perks to being 50 and over, besides your brilliant pop culture credentials, it could mean cheaper car insurance.

Over-50s are sometimes considered low-risk drivers and less likely to file a claim. And that could mean cheaper car insurance thanks to years of driving experience.

How can I try to keep my car insurance costs low?

Here are five tips to help you find or keep a lower premium when exploring car insurance:

  1. Consider the type of car you drive – the type of car you drive can impact your premium and may be less expensive to insure.
  2. Make the mileage count – check how much you drive based on your mileage. Often, the lower the mileage, the less money you have in your pocket.
  3. Park safely – you may be able to get lower premiums if you park your car in a driveway or garage rather than on the road overnight.
  4. Be careful with additional drivers – taking out a policy for a young, inexperienced driver can reduce their premium. But it could also increase yours. Most importantly, make sure you don’t run the risk of being “insurance fronted” or stating that you are one of the primary drivers when that is not the case. Consult our article about car insurance: the consequences to find out more.
  5. Pay in full – this can help reduce the price of your car insurance if you can afford to pay the full amount annually rather than monthly.

What is covered by car insurance

Choose between two levels of coverage for each car. OUR Third parties, fire and theft the insurance covers less but still offers several notches more protection than the basic ‘third party’ cover that everyone needs to drive in the UK. OUR comprehensive insurance offers robust cover, including costs relating to damage to your own car or van, for example in the event of an accident.

We’ve listed here how each type covers you – and for how much, and where there’s a limit on what we’ll pay.
