U.S. travel and tourism will continue to hit record numbers in 2025

Booming travel and tourism in the United States is poised for even more record numbers in the months to come. TuesdaySecretary of State Antony J. Blinken and Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo highlighted how the two departments are working together to help people travel to and from America. The update also served as a commentary on the economic benefits of the travel and tourism industry.

Secretary Blinken reported that 11.5 million visas were issued in 2024, of which 8.5 million were visitor visas, an increase of 10% from the previous year. The waiting time to obtain a visa has also decreased by 60% since the acute phase of the pandemic, with the median waiting time being around 60 days from the date of the interview. The United States plans to add 1 million more appointments for fiscal 2025, in part to accommodate crowds traveling for the FIFA World Cup, Olympics and future sporting events.

“We are doing everything we can to encourage everyone who comes to this country for these incredible events – (helping them) to get their visas in a timely manner,” Secretary Blinken said.

Obtaining a new passport or renewal is also faster, thanks to the launch of the government program new online passport renewal programand waiting times are reduced to four to six weeks. An estimated 24.5 million passport booklets and cards were issued in the 2024 financial year alone.

All these changes not only mean busy airports but also a boost to the economy, added Secretary Raimondo. “Travel and tourism is not only fun, it’s not only meaningful, it’s a real business and it keeps jobs in America,” she said. The travel industry accounts for approximately 10 million U.S. jobs and $2.3 trillion in economic activity.

Visits to the United States have increased enormously and are expected to surpass pre-Covid figures. “Last year, footfall was 66 million people, up from 50 million the year before. By next year, the industry will be fully recovered from Covid and on track to see 90 million visitors d ‘by 2026,” Secretary Raimondo said. The projection comes a year earlier than the ministry’s strategic objective.

Maybe it’s time to think TSA Pre-Check if you haven’t already. A boost to the economy means a rush at the airport.
