FSU fan support plummets as Mike Norvell faces historic losing season

Florida State reported an attendance of 55,107 fans for its latest loss to North Carolina inside Doak Campbell Stadium. It didn’t take long for those fans to turn on the Seminoles, as the cheers were quickly drowned out by boos after the offense reached three points on its first drive. Overall, once again, there was nothing to celebrate for the fans and frustration is mounting on all fronts.

The product on the field has become embarrassing and this is reflected in the fan support. By halftime, those wearing garnet and gold were already heading toward the exits. At the start of the fourth quarter, only a few thousand people remained to endure the misery of the biggest loss for the state of Florida in four years.

Losing games, rookies, and your status on the national stage is one thing, but when fan and booster support wanes, you’ve truly lost everything. Mike Norvell said he didn’t hear the criticism aimed at the Seminoles on Saturday, but he also acknowledged the frustration that comes with one of the worst years in program history. FSU’s five-game losing streak is the program’s longest in 49 years and before Bobby Bowden arrived in Tallahassee.

“Well, I really haven’t heard from them, so I would just — I know everyone is frustrated. I’m frustrated. At the end of the day, we work very hard to be able to try to represent the program the way which it deserves to be, and we didn’t get there the way we’re playing,” Norvell said after the loss. “We have to respond to that. We have to continue to believe in it. We have to be able to move forward. When you’re a fan or someone who comes to watch the game, you want to see things done right. a certain way, and you can have big emotions about it.”

“Our fan base, we have a great fan base, and we have one that is extremely passionate. At the end of the day, I’m sure this isn’t the first time a team or players have gone through this “Norvell continued. “I know it’s happened to a lot of guys who have become some of the greatest players in Florida State history. They’re celebrated in that moment.”

But for now, there is nothing to celebrate. Florida State has the worst offense in P4 and maybe all of college football. The unit is basically unwatchable because of an offensive line that makes Willie Taggart look like an expert and a group of talented players who couldn’t catch a ball if their lives depended on it. The defense is good but nothing like the strength expected during the preseason. The Seminoles are an undisciplined football team that is showing signs of giving up and there aren’t really any leaders to talk about.

What surprised me the most after the loss to North Carolina was how calm it was around the stadium. Typically, after the NoleGameday team has completed its postgame press conference duties, a crowd of fans waits outside the Moore Athletic Center near the Bobby Bowden statue in the hoping to get autographs or take photos with the players. This was even the case earlier this month when FSU was defeated by Clemson on Saturday night.

This game ended a lot early, so you’d think there would be a few people waiting, parents with their kids, something. Instead, there weren’t even any security guards outside the gates. It was so quiet you could hear a pin drop.

“I mean, like I said, for our fans, I understand the frustration. There’s no fan more frustrated than me,” Norvell said Monday. “Nobody is more invested in these players and this program than our staff, and I’m going to watch the work, and has it been good enough, no, it hasn’t. We haven’t gotten the results that everyone else wants or expects here.

Florida State has traditionally had an extremely proud and passionate fan base. Those emotions obviously boiled over with no clear path in sight for the Seminoles to end their struggles in the midst of a season lost weeks ago.

Many of those fans took to social media, calling for the Seminoles to make coaching changes. Others wonder if they will renew their subscriptions with prices and recall fees reaching astronomical numbers considering the product on the ground is bad enough to make your eyes bleed.

At some point, we must consider the economic impact of a historically terrible year. The Seminoles are already operating at limited capacity due to ongoing renovations at their iconic venue, meaning about 25,000 fewer fans are attending games this season. Sure, spending on clothing and other gear needs to go down, but I’m sure the state of Florida is making a killing on beer.

Norvell pointed out that some of the things the Seminoles have done on the field are worth booing. With that, he’s still confident that Florida State can turn this program around. It better be done quickly, otherwise he won’t be able to win back that fan base.

“It’s one of the best places in the United States of America because of the fan base, who we represent and what we can do, and that passion – yes, I get it,” said Norvell. “Some of the things we put on the field deserve to be put on the field. It’s all part of this game, and it’s all part of it. But when it comes to belief, it’s a choice people have to make .But I absolutely know and believe in where we are going, and we will get there.”
