Before Maccabi Tel Aviv-Ajax match, Amsterdam limits protests

The mayor of Amsterdam has banned pro-Palestinian demonstrations in front of the Johan Cryuff stadium before the Ajax match on Thursday evening.Maccabi Tel Aviv football match.

The mayor, Femle Halsema, alongside the police and the prosecutor, announced the ban on a planned demonstration in front of the main gate, fearing clashes between supporters. The gathering was moved one square kilometer.

Halsema told Amsterdam’s AT5 that “violent clashes are a realistic prospect.”

She said the city couldn’t find a way to facilitate the protest without compromising security.

Halsema added that she had offered the protesters, united as part of Week 4 Palestine, an alternative location.

Week 4 Palestine posted on Instagram the words “we have no other choice”, appearing to accept the decision.

The group added that it expected “a large number of Zionist football hooligans” and feared that IDF soldiers would “cause problems.”

The group encouraged protesters to hide their keffiyehs and Palestinian symbols until the demonstration began.

“They were waiting for us outside the casino,” Israeli fans told N12. “All the Israelis who ordered a taxi were ambushed by eight Turks who beat them up. Finally, we walked with a police escort from the casino to Dam Square, with Turks carrying sticks and other things walking past us the whole way. It was the scariest experience I’ve ever had in football.”

3,000 Maccabi Tel Aviv fans are expected to attend the Ajax match, despite intense efforts by BDS organizations to have the match canceled.

Signs and banners appeared across the city reading “Expel Israel from UEFA”.

In a video published by Week 4 Palestine, a man appears to be struggling in a canal. The caption reads “A Zionist received a free swimming lesson.”

A voice can be heard saying in the video “say liberate Palestine and we’ll go.” It is unclear whether the man was pushed into the water. The Jerusalem Post contacted Dutch police for comment.
