‘We have a lot of leverage’: Democrats cut spending

Democrats say there is at least one small silver lining to the Republicans’ takeover of Washington: Their slim majority in Congress could help save clean energy and climate finance.

That’s the word from Senate Appropriations Chair Patty Murray (D-Wash.) and House Appropriations Ranking Member Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.), who said bipartisanship will prevail despite the GOP “trifecta” next year.

If the 2025 tax spending debates are deferred to the next Congress, the likely need for at least some Democratic support on spending legislation could frustrate Republican efforts to cut discretionary funding, particularly for renewable energy, energy efficiency and climate resilience.

Democrats will oppose these efforts, DeLauro said, but the most extreme proposals will be unlikely to pass.
