Authorities search for person who jumped into Detroit River

Authorities are searching for a person who allegedly jumped into the Detroit River early Thursday, a representative from the U.S. Coast Guard’s Detroit Sector said.

The USCG received notification of the incident at 4:30 a.m. and immediately launched a search operation, the representative told The News.

Detroit sector officials sent a helicopter to help with the search and were refueling the plane before sending it back shortly before 8 a.m.

USCG boats were also on the river searching near Belle Isle alongside crews from the Detroit Fire Department and boats from the Canadian Joint Rescue Coordination Center on the Canadian side of the water, the agency said. representative.

The operation was still a rescue mission Thursday morning, the representative said.

The Detroit Fire Department deployed a search and rescue boat to assist other agencies in the search, a representative told the Detroit News. Authorities don’t know why the person jumped into the river.

Thursday’s rescue operation comes after Detroit firefighters saved a river man last week.

Dispatchers received a 911 call around 3:30 a.m. Oct. 21 about a man in the river screaming for help, the Detroit Fire Department said. First responders were able to rescue the man and take him to hospital.
