In July, Microsoft has enabled MSN widgets on the lock screen for everyone using Windows 11 and Windows 10. However, the problem with this approach is that Microsoft does not offer full control over what appears on the lock screen. It doesn’t even let you configure the lock screen to show nothing when rotating Bing wallpapers.

Not many people use the widget array on Windows 11, but Microsoft still decided to experiment with a similar idea on the lock screen. MSN Lock Screen Widgets are available to everyone, and many people don’t like the limited control the company offers, as you can only disable the integration by selecting another app to replace it.

Microsoft exclusively told Windows Latest that it is aware of the issue and plans to add a feature that will let you choose what appears on the lock screen, including changing widgets.

Microsoft officials have confirmed that the feature will allow us to choose if only the MSN Weather widget appears, and that there is an option to hide other widgets like MSN Money or Sports and vice versa.

The feature has not yet appeared in Windows 11 or Windows 10, but some new features references In Build 27747 point to a public preview:

  • The ability to customize widgets on your lock screen
  • Your widgets Manage widgets on your lock screen.
  • Add a widget.
  • Add widgets to your lock screen.

These references confirm our previous reports that a future version of Windows 11 24H2 will allow you to edit or manage widgets, so you can choose what exactly appears on the lock screen.

Windows 11 Lock Screen Weather

As you can see in the GIF above, these MSN widgets appear together on the lock screen when you have the “Weather” option selected. MSN widgets include Weather, Money, Sports, and Traffic.

It clutters the lock screen, but at the same time it can be nice to have a weather widget and remove everything else. It’s subjective, but it’s what many users want.

Additionally, if you want to disable these widgets, you need to select another app instead of Weather to display the content on the lock screen. While the weather and widgets will disappear, that means something else will take their place on the lock screen.

Microsoft hasn’t added a “None” option yet, so you have to choose between Weather (this enables all widgets), Mail, Calendar, and Dev Home.

You may have other options depending on the applications installed on your system, but it is not possible to configure the lock screen to display nothing.

It’s worth noting that MSN integration is also available in Windows 11 Enterprise and the public version of Windows 10.

Microsoft is still considering integration in pre-release builds, so it will likely be a while before the ability to manage MSN lock screen widgets appears in stable Windows 11, followed by Windows 10.

I expect it to appear in stable releases early next year.
