NCCU active shooter: suspect in custody following central North Carolina alert

DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) — Two unrelated shootings took place Saturday on the campus of North Carolina Central University during Homecoming weekend.

A suspect involved in one of them will appear in court on Monday.

Debra Saunders-White Residence

At 7:43 p.m., the NCCU Police Department received reports of shots fired and an alert was sent to campus.

The investigation revealed no gunshot wounds, but three shots were fired into the air.

It happened in the parking lot behind the Debra Saunders-White residence.

Police took Danye Negash Medhin into custody and cleared the campus at 8:11 p.m. Medhin is accused of discharging a firearm at an educational institution and committing criminal rioting.

He is due to appear in Durham County Court at 9am on Monday.

Eagle Campus Walk

After the first, the university began suspending activities and cleaning the campus.

While conducting a sweep of the campus, officers heard additional gunshots and issued a separate alert to the campus at 8:59 p.m.

Their investigation into the various shootings determined that four people, including an NCCU student, suffered non-life-threatening gunshot wounds near the Student Services Building on Eagle Campus Drive. These people were taken to a local hospital.

The campus was placed on lockdown until the NCCU Police Department gave the campus the all clear at 11:48 p.m.

State and local law enforcement continues to investigate both shootings.
