NEMO welcomes new maritime members

The Nuclear Energy Maritime Organization (NEMO), implemented in March headquartered in London, announced two new members. NEMO works with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to establish global standards and regulations for the deployment, operation and decommissioning of nuclear energy in the environment maritime and to promote the commercialization of nuclear energy at sea.

The first annual meeting of NEMO members took place in September. It included the first meetings of working groups focused on maritime regulations and nuclear safety standards. A third working group will focus on maritime nuclear liability and insurance.

The new members are the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) as well as the American start-up Applied Maritime Sciences (AMS), bringing the number of NEMO members to 25, plus three associate members.

IRS is an international ship classification company providing ship classification and certification services as well as technical inspection services. The IRS is a member of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS). It covers a wide range of maritime, offshore and industrial projects.

AMS is a new American company seeking to develop advanced nuclear solutions, including a range of maritime platforms and new markets for advanced marinized reactor systems. Its website simply states that it “accelerates the development and implementation of deep, high-impact technologies with a maritime nexus,” but provides no further information.
