Chennai hospital stabbed: IMA demands ‘overhaul of security atmosphere’ | Latest news India

The IMA statement comes after a government doctor was stabbed seven times with a knife by a patient’s son at Kalaignar Centenary Hospital in Chennai.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Wednesday condemned the brutal attack on a doctor by a patient in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The organization demanded from governments “strong legislation, exemplary sanctions and proactive security measures” to protect doctors.

“No superficial damage control measures by governments will allow doctors to work without fear in this country,” he said in a letter.

“Strong deterrent legislation, exemplary sanctions and proactive security measures are needed now and here. All governments have been made aware of this heinous crime. The country’s medical profession is deeply disturbed and skeptical about corrective measures for this always recurring crime. violence,” he adds.

“Only a complete overhaul of the safety climate in hospitals could restore doctors’ confidence. The nation owes it to its doctors,” the letter added.

Chennai doctor stabbed 7 times by patient

The IMA statement came after a government doctor was stabbed seven times with a knife by the son of a patient at Kalaignar Centenary Hospital in Chennai on Wednesday.

The doctor, Dr. Balaji Jaganathan, is currently receiving treatment in the intensive care unit recovering from the attack, with injuries to his neck, ears, forehead, back and stomach.

Accused arrested

Police arrested Vignesh, a resident of Chennai, who attacked Dr Balaji. He was upset because his mother apparently wasn’t receiving proper care at the hospital.

The incident took place when Dr Balaji was working in the cancer ward of the government hospital. Following the attack, Vignesh attempted to flee but was apprehended and handed over to the police.

Deputy CM Stalin responds

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MP Stalin responded to the shocking incident by ordering the officials concerned to conduct a detailed investigation.

“The selfless work of our government doctors in providing proper treatment to patients in government hospitals is immeasurable. We must ensure their safety. The government will take all measures to prevent such incidents in the future,” he said in a post on X.
