Bronx drivers skirt traffic laws to avoid $250 fine and save parking spaces

Big Apple drivers are trying to avoid costly parking tickets and keep people from taking their spots.

Some Bronx motorists are getting creative to avoid $250 tickets now that about 1,000 MTA buses are equipped with cameras to capture the license plates of cars blocking bus lanes.

Video shared online showed a row of vehicles illegally parked in a bus lane on Webster Avenue, sitting with their trunks open, their license plates facing the sky, in an attempt to evade cameras.

“POV: You avoid a bus lane ticket in New York” a TikToker shared last Sunday.

Some were impressed by this decision.

“This is really awesome,” marveled one woman in the comments on the clip, which has been viewed 150,000 times.

“If only my plate was mounted on the trunk and not on the bumper,” one man lamented.

Others have put the brakes on the trunk idea.

“You won’t win the battle against a bus ticket,” one woman advised.

“I’m closing my trunks while doing this,” warned one TikTok user.

Other plates were seen covered with napkins to prevent them from being photographed.

Fines for obscuring license plates to prevent them from being captured by cameras can be even higher than the bus ticket itself: in effect since June, they range from $100 to $500.

Repeat offenders with three or more convictions within five years face a 90-day suspension of their registration, according to the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Avoiding bus lanes isn’t the only smart move for city drivers.

On Monday, the same TikToker shared a video of an apparently fake fire hydrant which had overturned on a sidewalk in New York.

“People put fake fire hydrants in front of their houses so you won’t park there,” she wrote, adding, “I wonder why there are 5 fire hydrants on a block .”
