Passengers use duct tape to hold back man trying to open flight door

A passenger aboard an American Airlines flight had to be restrained and restrained by other passengers with duct tape after trying to open the cabin door while the plane was in flight on November 19.

American Airlines Flight 1915 was heading from Milwaukee to Dallas when the man tried to open the door, prompting other passengers to take action.

Doug McCright, a front-row passenger on the flight, said a flight attendant told a passenger to return to his seat.

“All you could think was, ‘I have to stop this guy,'” McCright told TODAY.

“He said, ‘I’m getting off this plane. I have to get off the plane,” McCright added.

A public safety report on the incident says a flight attendant described the man as “agitated,” while noting that she positioned herself between the man and the door before he “rushes” forward, hitting her and injuring her left wrist and neck. Another witness said in the report that the man “wanted to get off the flight because he was the ‘captain’.”

Another passenger, Charlie Boris, also helped defuse the situation.

McCright says passengers who responded to the episode duct-taped the man’s feet and wrists, with some of them remaining with him in the front galley until the plane landed at its destination.

“Four or five law enforcement officers showed up, picked it up like it was a roll of carpet and immediately carried it away,” he said.

American Airlines said in a statement to NBC News that law enforcement arrived at the airport “due to a disruptive customer,” while adding: “The safety and security of our customers and members of the our team are our top priority and we thank our team members and our customers. to manage a difficult situation.

“The police arrested one person and the investigation continues,” Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport said in a statement to NBC News.

The public safety report says the man has a Canadian passport and was detained for a mental evaluation, but was not arrested.
