‘Your testimony is incredible,’ prosecution tells Singh: Key points from day 12 of WP leader’s trial

2. The prosecution clashes with Singh on the meaning of “I will not judge you”

Mr Ang insisted on what he meant when he told Ms Khan in a meeting on October 3, 2021, that “I won’t judge you”, a day before she repeated her lie to the Parliament.

Singh and Ms Khan offered different interpretations in court of what was then said.

In his testimony, Singh said he told Ms Khan to take ownership and responsibility, adding that he would not judge her if he sensed her discomfort. “What I meant by that is I won’t judge you if you take responsibility for it,” he said.

Ms Khan earlier said she thought Singh meant he would not judge her for continuing the narrative.

On November 7, Mr Ang said: “Mr Singh, let me ask you some logical questions, okay, which will show to a large extent your level of honesty and candor. »

Mr Ang said the phrase “I won’t judge you” is, on its own, often used to tell a person that it is okay to admit wrongdoing against them.

He said: “For example, let’s say you don’t want to go to work tomorrow, then you say to your friend, ‘Aiya, I think I’ll get a medical certificate so I can not work tomorrow.’ And then your friend says, “Okay, go ahead. I won’t judge you.’”

Singh responded with a chuckle: “I’ve never heard that before, but I disagree.”

Mr Ang gave another example: “You want to avoid a relative’s birthday party (and you say), ‘I’ll make up an excuse, I’m not going.’ And your wife says, “I won’t judge you” – that’s how “I won’t judge you” is commonly used, okay?

“No, I don’t agree,” Singh said.

Mr Ang then asked if Singh meant that if Ms Khan did something correct and good the next day, which she did, he would not judge her. Singh agreed with this.

“The truth, Mr. Singh, is that you were giving him the green light to do something wrong by telling him to continue with the story, okay?” » asked Mr. Ang.

Singh disagreed.

Mr Ang also referred to an October 7, 2021 email from Ms Khan in which she thanked Singh for not judging her, saying it meant she had taken Singh’s statement that he would not judge her as a guide to continue lying.

He said: “Instead of being afraid that you will take her to task, she sends you this email to thank you for “taking care of me and guiding me without judgment” – is this your proof that she did this?

Singh responded that he did not tell her to continue the story.

In response, Mr Ang said: “Mr Singh, I must tell you that your testimony is incredible, do you agree?

Singh disagreed.
