The charity highlights the importance of Wombles in inspiring people across the Midlands and the rest of the UK to work with family, friends and neighbors to improve their local environment.

The group’s positive environmental message aims to create the largest grassroots environmental movement in the country, with official Wombles groups in every town, village, city and school. The #WomblesWanted campaign is designed to encourage people to join an existing official Wombles group or start their own group for their area. From picking up litter in the local park to visiting recycling centers, reducing water pollution, planting trees, shrubs and wildflowers, encouraging wildlife or Commitment to more sustainable shopping, members of the Official Wombles Group are doing all sorts of good things for their communities.

Everyone knows the Wombles. The Wombles first appeared in a series of children’s books written by Elizabeth Beresford beginning in 1968. Since then, they have won the hearts of families around the world with their affectionate charm, care and consideration of their peers , their environment and their local communities.

More than 60 local organisations, recruited through a pilot programme, have already registered as official Womble groups, involving more than 17,500 dedicated volunteers. The charity expects hundreds more groups to be formed as a result of the #WomblesWanted campaign. In addition to community groups, The Wombles intend to engage with schools and educational institutions to further proliferate their work and positive messages in the years to come.
