New England’s warming trend continues Thursday, but a little cooler

New Englanders I felt the heat yesterdaywith dozens of towns and communities in southern and central New England new daily records as afternoon highs reached the upper 70s and lower 80s.

Boston, Norwood, Providence, Fitchburg, Westfield, Springfield, Hartford, Concord, NH, Manchester, NH and Portland all easily surpassed previous records for the day, which saw far more sun than clouds amid a strong flow from the southwest. For Boston, yesterday’s high of 82 made it the last day of the year on record where temperatures reached 80 degrees or higher.

The pendulum will now begin to swing in the opposite direction today, with the first of two possible cold fronts finally bringing temperatures back to seasonal norms. Although Boston and much of southern New England will still experience temperatures about 10 degrees warmer than average this afternoon, it will be significantly cooler than yesterday.

Skies will be partly cloudy with prolonged periods of sunshine as the first front moves through New England today. Generally sunny skies should prevail across the region by the afternoon. There is a very low probability that a pop-up well will appear west and north of Boston; the city is expected to remain dry today.

The day will start in the upper 50s to mid 50s for the morning commute before gradually climbing into the upper 60s. A few points may hit 70 briefly before sunset at exactly 4:30 p.m. today.

With the passage of the front today, we will see a change in the wind, coming from the northwest at around 10 miles per hour. The weather may not be as windy as yesterday, but there will still be some notable gusts at 15 and 20 miles per hour.

With the shift to a northwest flow today, northern New England may not get as warm, but would remain in the mid to upper 50s this afternoon regardless of whether the sun shines rises during the afternoon.

Another cold front will bring more powerful cool air across New England over the weekend. This will result in a strong high pressure system and bring daily highs back into the 50s with drier weather. Perhaps the best chance for a quick spray is in parts of central and northern Vermont and New Hampshire. But overall, the overall risk from any wet activity remains low.

Finally a chance of rain?

The best chance we will have for a while for widespread precipitation will occur late Sunday into Monday. It may not be much, but it’s our best chance to see more than just traces of precipitation. This will ultimately depend on how much moisture this system can draw from the south before the front passes.

Southern New England: A mix of sun and clouds throughout the day as a front mixes the air up a bit. Temperatures are cooler but still mild with highs in the upper 60s. Rapid spraying is unlikely to be caused by one or two occasional showers, but very unlikely.

Western Mass.: A little more cloudy today with the possibility of a quick shower. Highs in the upper 50s in Berkshire County and a decent shot to 70 in the Pioneer Valley. This will depend on the sunshine with the transition to a northwesterly flow in place.

Cape and Islands: Partly to mostly sunny skies with highs remaining between 60 and 60 degrees over the peninsula and islands. A breeze remains in place at around 10 to 15 mph, with the area likely remaining dry today as the front passes.

Northern New England: Partly to partly cloudy skies today as the front arrives early enough to keep the clouds with a few light showers or showers, meaning today’s highs will top out in the mid to upper 50s , especially as cooler air arrives earlier in the day.

Maximum temperatures will be cooler than yesterday but still above average across most of southern and central New England.Boston Globe
