3 takeaways from Hurricanes’ 6-4 win over Flyers – The Hockey Writers – Carolina Hurricanes

The Carolina Hurricanes hosted the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday, November 5 for a showdown in the Metropolitan Division. The Canes entered the game on a six-game winning streak after defeating the Washington Capitals 4-2 on Sunday, November 3. Every division game means more, especially at the start of the 2024-25 season. In the end, the supernova-hot Canes earned their seventh straight victory over the Flyers in a back-and-forth 6-4 game. What was it about the 10-goal showdown between these two teams that always produces tense games?

Martin Necas is inevitable

Once again, what about Martin Necas? The 25-year-old Czech forward is off to the best start of his career as he had another multi-point night for the Hurricanes. This is his seventh multipoint game in the last nine. That’s more than in fuego, which is as big as the sun and is supernova hot for “Neci,” as it’s called. He had an assist on Eric Robinson’s goal in the second period, followed by the winning goal, his third of the season, in the third period with less than 30 seconds to play.

After 11 games, he has seven goals and 20 points this season. That puts him at a pace of almost two points per game, so few could say they saw that coming from Necas. He is the only player in franchise history with seven multi-point games and 20 points in the first 11 games overall.

After a difficult 2023-24 season that saw him go from 71 points the previous season to 53, it’s a start to the season that Necas is surely happy about. Not a bad way to start the first year of the two-year contract he signed in July. $6.5 million per season. He appears to be worth that contract, and more, already.

Two-man disadvantage bites the canes again

There seems to be a trend over the last couple of games that Rod Brind’Amour It shouldn’t be too happy. In the last two games, including Tuesday, the Hurricanes have taken unnecessary penalties. While some could be classified as tick-tock calls, it led to them losing two guys and on the wrong side of a penalty at 5-on-3. In both cases, the opposing team capitalized and the penalty shootout were 3 for 4 and 2 for 3 in both games this week. That’s not something Brind’Amour or his team want to see, especially against divisional opponents and even more so against teams that are currently struggling.

The hope heading into Thursday’s game against the Pittsburgh Penguins is to limit unnecessary penalties and not take two players down too quickly. This is a trend that should be curbed as soon as possible.

The power of the jacks

Aside from Necas having another stellar game, it was the power of the Jacks that allowed the Hurricanes to take an early lead. Beginner Jackson Blake (It Matters) tied the game early in the first period after the Flyers took an early lead. He was assisted by Jack Drury, his third assist and Blake’s fourth goal of the season.

Later in the game, after the Flyers tied it 3-3 at 1:18 of the third period, the Canes were quick to regain the lead. It was Jack Roslovic or “Rosey” who ended up scoring his seventh of the season to make it 4-3 30 seconds after the Flyers tied it at three. In the game, three different versions of “Jack” scored a point for the Hurricanes. Although it’s an obscure statistic or piece of knowledge to know, it’s fun to know, especially in hockey.

In the end, the Hurricanes won 6-4 for their seventh straight victory after Seth Jarvis put this game out of reach with an empty-net goal, his fourth of the season.

Bring on the penguins

There’s no real rest for the Hurricanes as they will play another Metropolitan Division game on Thursday, November 7th. This time, they will face the Penguins again after beating them 4-1 on October 18 in Pittsburgh. The game will be broadcast on Fan Duel Sports Network with puck drop at 7 p.m. Eastern. As always, Mike Maniscalco and Tripp Tracy will be on the call. Can the Hurricanes extend their winning streak to eight games and go 10-2-0?
