If there’s one overarching lesson Hollywood should take from the 2024 box office, it’s that song-and-dance-adjacent superhero spinoffs don’t work. Joker: Folie À Deux spectacular flop for Warner Bros. (he’s already out of the top 10 this week) and now Venom: The Last Dance made a similar swan dive for Sony.

The Tom Hardy-led trio may have opened atop the box office this weekend, but Sony executives probably aren’t doing a happy dance with its $51 million haul. The last dance recorded the lowest opening weekend of all Venom films, with the original 2018 release grossing $80 million and the 2021 sequel Venom: Let there be carnage bringing in $90 million. However, all is not doom and gloom for the symbiote on its final journey. It seemed to find slightly more buying overseas, with the film adding another $124 million to its international total. With a budget of around $120 million, according to Deadlineit will inevitably generate profits eventually, even if it is not as high as its hosts would have hoped.

Otherwise, it was a pretty light weekend to go to the movies. Rare are three films to appear in the top 10 with only six-figure returns: Anora, Piece by pieceAnd Transformers One. That’s still great news for the Mikey Madison-led Sex Worker Cinderella Story, which grossed $867,142 from just 34 theaters. The news is not as good for Piece by piece And Transformers Onewhich fell 64.8% and 63.8% respectively compared to last weekend. Maybe people were too distracted by their movie themed Halloween costumes go see one; we will see if the numbers go back up next weekend.
