FIFA announces first Club World Cup sponsor with Chinese electronics company branding VAR checks

SHANGHAI, China — FIFA finally announced a first sponsor for its revamped Club World Cup on Wednesday in a deal that will control video controls at the tournament in the United States next year.

Chinese consumer electronics company Hisense will have “branding appearing in the video operating room and on pitchside screens”, FIFA said in a statement, as match officials review key incidents in the 32-team tournament that will be played in 11 U.S. cities from June 15 to July. 13.

Although no previous FIFA tournament has had a sponsor for video reviews since the technology was approved ahead of the 2018 Men’s World Cup in Russia, Hisense was the official “VAR screen supplier” for the FIFA World Cup. This year’s Europe organized by UEFA in Germany.

Less than eight months until the Club World Cup opens – with Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami hosting the first match of a tournament which sees Real Madrid, Manchester City and Bayern Munich play their first competitive matches in the US – he now has a sponsor but still lacks any broadcast deal.

FIFA’s negotiations for a global streaming deal with Apple+ have stalled for several months and U.S. sponsors have focused more on deals for the 2026 Men’s World Cup to be co-hosted with Canada and Mexico.

Saudi sponsors are expected to sign on soon and help FIFA President Gianni Infantino fulfill his promise to clubs that the tournament’s total prize money will run into hundreds of millions of dollars every four years. FIFA is expected to confirm Saudi Arabia as the host of the 2034 World Cup on December 11.

The new deal with Hisense “paves the way for further sponsorship deals for FIFA’s new flagship club competition to be announced in the coming weeks”, the world football body said.

FIFA did not specify the value of the deal reached with Infantino during a signing ceremony in Shanghai.

Reviews of referees’ decisions during key incidents – for goals, penalties and red cards – can last at least two minutes, despite FIFA’s aim during trials in 2016 to complete reviews in 10 seconds approximately.

Hisense first signed up as a FIFA sponsor for the 2018 World Cup and has renewed its commitment for the 2022 edition in Qatar.

The TV and laptop maker also signed its first sponsorship deal with UEFA, while Infantino was still secretary general of the European football body, ahead of Euro 2016.
