Pokémon TCG Pocket Pack Change Leaves Bad Taste After Big Launch

Pokémon TCG Pocket finally arrived on iPhone and Android this week after a soft launch in New Zealand last month, much to the delight of fans of the series everywhere. However, after participating in the soft launch last month, I noticed a big change in the in-game store and I’m not impressed.

For those who don’t know, the currency used to purchase new packs in Pokémon TCG Pocket is primarily hourglasses. During the soft launch, you could get six packs of hourglasses for the price of 12 store tickets – yes, I know this is going in a very mathematical direction, but bear with me. Today, after going global, six-packs cost 18 store tickets, which adds 50% to the original asking price and makes it even harder to track down some of the biggest hitters in our market. It seems I’m not the only one who noticed the change. At the time of writing, the second hottest item in Pokémon TCG Pocket Reddit Is anyone complaining about the change, calling it “a huge long-term drag on card acquisition.” Honestly, I couldn’t say it better myself, and while it’s not unusual for a mobile game to make these kinds of changes to push users to spend money on in-game resources, it remains disappointing.

This wouldn’t be as much of a problem if the in-game store wasn’t already a bit frustrating, limiting the number of hourglass packs you can collect using store tickets to 70 per month. That’s the equivalent of just five packs, with ten hourglasses to spare, each month. Sure, you get two free packs each day, three if you’re a premium user, but that makes card acquisition quite slow considering there are over 200 cards to collect in the first three sets. Simply put, it won’t be an easy feat to collect them all.

Unfortunately, it seems unlikely that the Pokémon TCG Pocket store change will return to what it was during the soft launch, so we’re going to have to get used to spending more resources on hourglass packs.
