1 person killed after being trapped in overturned boat off Redondo Beach coast

REDONDO BEACH, Calif. (KABC) — One person is dead and five others were rescued after a small boat overturned in rough conditions off the coast of Redondo Beach.

The Redondo Beach Harbor Patrol received a distress call around 1 p.m. Sunday.

Authorities were called to an overturned 26-foot MacGregor boat – a dual-purpose boat that can function as a sailboat and a motorboat – about two miles off shore, where five people were clinging to the side, including a child and the captain of the boat. .

They were able to rescue all five people and bring them to shore for evaluation. They were described as being in stable condition with no serious injuries.

But a sixth person, a man in his fifties, who was on board the boat, had not resurfaced and is believed to be stuck inside.

Rescuers went underwater and, after searching for about 45 minutes, found the missing person trapped inside the boat. They brought the person to the surface and attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation, but without success. The person was pronounced dead at the scene.

It was not immediately clear how the boat overturned.

Lifeguards said conditions were choppy on the water Sunday and not ideal for boating.

“We’ve had some pretty windy conditions since the jump this morning,” said Capt. Pono Barnes of the Los Angeles County Fire Rescue. “It was pretty choppy on the water. We only have one flag today. It was a gale warning. If you plan on sailing or going out on the water, I might reevaluate and ‘would wait for calmer conditions.’

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is investigating.
