Are you worried about slips and falls this winter? Here’s how to avoid them – The Irish News

Rain, slush and snow are expected this winter, so it is important to be extra careful on icy sidewalks and slippery surfaces.

A bad fall can have serious consequences on our physical and mental health, especially as we age and are more vulnerable.

So why are older adults more prone to falls this time of year and what can we do to prevent them?

“Muscle strength and balance tend to decline with age and conditions such as arthritis can make movement painful and difficult,” says Izabela Klaczkiewicz, managing director of Loveday Abbey Road Nursing Home. “Vision can also deteriorate, making it more difficult to spot dangers.

“Some medications commonly prescribed to older people can cause dizziness or affect coordination.

“All of these factors combined can make maintaining balance more difficult, particularly in winter, when outdoor conditions are more dangerous.”

“Fractures, such as broken hips or wrists, are common and can significantly reduce mobility,” says Klaczkiewicz. “This loss of mobility can lead to other complications, such as muscle weakness and joint stiffness, due to decreased activity.”

Even if a fall does not result in serious injury, it can still take a toll on our mind.

“Any fall can lead to post-fall syndrome which presents a serious combination of symptoms that can impact our daily activities,” says Kate Sheehan, occupational therapist at Stannah stair lifts.

“These symptoms include anxiety, loss of confidence, less motivation to engage in previously enjoyed activities, higher risk of further falls due to changes in gait, and reduced ability to initiate movement.”

Here are some tips to prevent falls this winter…

Suitable shoes

“In addition to sturdy, well-fitting shoes with good traction, consider winter boots with insulated liners for added warmth without sacrificing support,” suggests Klaczkiewicz. “Choose shoes with a firm heel to stabilize the foot and a cushioned sole for comfort.

“Avoid heels, flip-flops, or open-toed sandals, as they provide less stability.”

Be very careful

“Try not to rush,” Sheehan says. “Pay attention to the path you are on and avoid slippery leaves as much as possible.”

Buy slippers that fit well

“Having well-fitting slippers with non-slip soles will help reduce the risk of falls,” says Sheehan. “Never walk around in tights or socks as they are slippery and can cause an unexpected fall, especially on a wooden or vinyl floor. »

Install anti-slip strips

“Apply non-slip strips to stairs, both indoors and outdoors, and place non-slip mats in the kitchen, bathroom and entryways to prevent slipping on wet or slippery floors,” recommends Klaczkiewicz.

“It’s important to know where your pet is, so they don’t get in your way,” notes Sheehan.

Do regular exercises to improve balance

“Regular balance exercises like heel-to-toe walking, leg raises, and seated walks can improve coordination and stability, reducing the risk of falls,” says Klaczkiewicz. “Gentle flexibility exercises for the ankles, hips and shoulders promote better movement by keeping joints flexible.

“Resistance training with light weights or resistance bands also strengthens the legs and core, which are essential for maintaining balance.”

Install an alarm

“Having a community alarm installed in your home, activated via a wrist alarm or pendant, can reassure you and your family members in the event of a fall,” says Sheehan. “An Alexa or Echo (from Amazon) can also allow you to call your family if you have fallen or if you have a smartphone you can use Siri to call a key person or an ambulance.”
