Joe Scarborough blames identity politics for Trump’s victory

While trying to find a reason why more voters are turning to the former president Donald Trump in the 2024 elections, MSNBC Morning Joe the co-hosts highlighted identity and cultural politics based on their own experiences.

Joe Scarborough And Willie Geist both recounted what they saw and heard before the election that saw Trump re-elected – a backlash against Democrats’ focus on trans identity and the Israel-Hamas war. As Mika Brzezinski read an extract from Matt Bai’s analysis In The Washington PostGeist and Scarborough presented concrete examples of Bai’s observations.

Geist recounted a local race where he lives, which he described as a “rural” area outside of the city:

I live in a relatively rural area outside of the city. There was a local race there, and the Republican changed her signs when she realized it. And every sign said “Save Girls’ Sports.” For a long time, it was just his name. And she said if you read and talk to people around the campaign, she couldn’t print enough of these signs. People were driving around saying, “I want one for my yard.” When it was just her name, they said, “Oh, it’s another candidate.” I don’t even know who she is or why she’s showing up. “Save Girls Sports” and they were everywhere.

Brzezinski read the following passage from Bai’s article:

I think the lawsuits fueled the narrative of Trump as a victim. I also think Democrats have dug themselves into a hole on cultural issues and identity politics. Trump’s vicious transgender ad in recent weeks (“She’s for them, he’s for you”) was probably the most effective of the cycle. I think this has probably affected a lot of traditionally Democratic voters who feel like the party is consumed with cultural issues while economic issues don’t really change. I think people needed a reason to feel good and hopeful about voting for her. And without that, a lot of frustrated voters have apparently decided to side with the guy who wants to burn it all down.

Scarborough then embarked on the Pro-Palestinian protests on university campuses which were motivated by far-left movements (and anti-Semitism) and caused division among Democrats:

Let’s dig a little deeper, because this is in addition to what happened on college campuses this fall, and what’s happened on college campuses over the last four or five years. I said that on the air, and every time I said it, people were like, “Oh, you’re just saying that because you’re a white conservative.” » No, I’m just saying that because every Democrat we’ve had dinner with in the last five years whose kids go to college say their kids are afraid to speak in class because they’ll be canceled.

Let me say it again – and they’re all Democrats – everyone we’ve had dinner with, if they have a kid in college: “How are the Red Sox?” Yeah, well, yeah, yeah. And they eat. “You know, nice day today, right?” “Yes.” “You know, my daughter at the University of Virginia? She is afraid to raise her hand in class because if she says something politically incorrect, she will immediately be canceled. She will be excluded from classes. It will be destroyed on social media by noon. So they sit quietly in class.

Now if any of you – what a camera, give me a camera to look at – boom! I’ll watch this one. If any of you say, “Oh, he’s like a conservative, white, Southern guy…” That’s why you lose. That’s why you lose. Because that’s what I heard. And I haven’t heard it from the Republicans. I haven’t heard it from the Trumpers. I’ve heard it from Democrats over the last three or four years. Their children were afraid to speak up in class and say something unpopular because they would be cancelled. And it’s an epidemic. Willie will tell you, this happens in New York schools. This happens in colleges. And all that makes people say, “Come on. Come on. It’s crazy.

But when it comes to anti-trans talking points, Scarborough cited popular opinion on transgender women in sports:

By the way, as we’ve said a thousand times on this show, Democrats should be smarter about women’s athletics. Eighty-five percent of Americans oppose men who transition after puberty and compete with women. And I’m not just saying this the day after the elections. I’ve been saying this for years. It’s not a difficult decision. You can show compassion and grace. And as Utah’s Republican governor said: “Let’s find a way to make this happen.” ” But one way to do that is to allow men who transition after puberty to compete against young girls who have worked their whole lives to be as good as they can be. And then they get destroyed in the pool, on the track, etc., etc., etc.
