Is Shohei Ohtani playing in Game 3 tonight? Latest injury updates on status of Dodgers star in World Series vs. Yankees

Everyone in the baseball world is wondering about the status of the game’s biggest superstar heading into Game 3 of the World Series.

Last time on the diamond, it was a bittersweet ending for Los Angeles fans. The Dodgers took a 2-0 series lead against the Yankees in a 4-2 victory in Game 2 Saturday night, but the main concern coming out of the contest was the health of star Shohei Ohtani.

The designated hitter left the game in the ninth inning with a shoulder injury after attempting to steal second base. Ohtani was seen grimacing in pain as he left the playing area, grabbing his left shoulder.

After a day off Sunday for travel, the Dodgers and Yankees are back in action Monday night, with Game 3 scheduled at Yankee Stadium. However, will Ohtani be in the Los Angeles lineup?

Here’s the latest on Ohtani’s status for Game 3 of the World Series on Monday night.

Is Shohei Ohtani playing tonight?

It won’t be official until the starting lineup is submitted before Game 3, but the Dodgers are confident Ohtani will be available for Monday night’s game.

“I just don’t see him not playing Game 3,” the Dodgers manager said. Dave Roberts said Sunday evening. “If he feels well enough to go, then I don’t see any reason why he wouldn’t be there.”

Ohtani underwent testing in Los Angeles after Game 2 and flew separately from the team to New York. He participated in a workout Sunday night, which would be a good test to see where his shoulder is following the injury.

“It’s going to be eye-opening,” Roberts said of Sunday’s practice. “He still has to practice and swing the bat, but, again, today feels better than yesterday, and our guess is tomorrow will feel better than today.”

Roberts said Ohtani’s injury caused pain, but it should be tolerable for the star. Ohtani is a left-handed hitter, meaning his front shoulder is the right. This bodes well for hitting.

“I don’t see it compromised,” Roberts said. “It’s the left shoulder, which is the back shoulder. So I don’t see how that affects his shots, if he’s able to go there.”

What happened to Shohei Ohtani?

Ohtani favored his arm after sliding to second base in Game 2 of the World Series. He rolled onto his back and grabbed his left arm seconds after the play, apparently having difficulty moving the arm before leaving the field with a trainer.

Audio could be heard between Roberts and a translator as they went outside to check on Ohtani. Japanese media reported that Ohtani said his shoulder had “popped out.”

After the match, Roberts told reporters Ohtani had a “small” subluxation of his left shoulder, but he remained positive about the Dodgers star’s continuation in the World Series.
