Musk worked illegally in the United States for a brief period in the 1990s (US media)

The Washington Post reported Saturday that the South African-born billionaire Elon Musk worked illegally in the United States for a brief period in the 1990s while building a start-up.

The outlet reported that Musk arrived in Palo Alto, California, in 1995 to attend Stanford University, but never enrolled in its graduate program.

Instead, he developed the software company Zip2, which was sold in 1999 for about $300 million, according to the news outlet.

Two immigration law experts cited by the Post said Musk should have been enrolled in a full course of study to maintain valid work authorization as a student.

Musk supported Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump in the November 5 US election.

Trump has for years described migrants as invaders and criminals, and during his presidency from 2017 to 2021, he took strict measures to curb legal and illegal immigration. He promises the greatest effort in U.S. history if re-elected.
