As a long-time advocate for women’s reproductive rights, Dear seemed to admit that she herself had been faced with the difficult decision to terminate a pregnancy. In her new memoir of the same nameCher detailed a meeting she had with her doctor days after marrying musician Gregg Allman, seemingly implying she had an abortion after her date.

Cher revealed she impulsively married Allman in an impromptu Vegas wedding after discovering she was pregnant. But the day after the wedding, the singer claims to have found “white powder” in Allman’s belongings even though he had promised her to remain sober, which strongly contributed to her decision to abort.

Returning from Vegas, Cher visited her private doctor – who had treated her for her two miscarriages and the birth of her first child, Chaz Bono, whom she shared with ex-husband Sonny Bono – for a check-up. . “While examining me, he discovered that I had ovarian cysts and said, ‘I can go ahead and take care of them,'” she wrote. “I’ve known him for so long that if they were dangerous, he would have said, ‘You have cysts. I have to take them out.'”

She added: “I knew pretty much what he meant when he proposed it as a choice.”

Listing the reasons why she wasn’t ready to become a mom again and how her last pregnancy left her bedridden for four months, Cher continued: “I was thinking about how I had to stay in bed when I was I was pregnant with Chaz and I couldn’t take a car for four months except for check-up appointments I had to be at work on Monday, I had to sing and dance I had a child, a. mother and a sister of whom I owed take care of myself.”

Without explicitly using the word “abortion,” Cher then admitted that she had to make a “choice.” “I knew I had to make a choice, and I knew what it was,” she wrote. “It was harder not having Gregory to talk to about it, but I made my decision and was very grateful for my doctor’s compassion in giving me one.”

The following year, Cher and Allman welcomed their first and only child together, a son named Elijah Blue. The two eventually divorced in 1979 after four years of marriage, and in May 2017, Allman died at age 69 from liver cancer. Cher attended his funeral.
