Carl Fogarty reveals he turned down I’m A Celeb three times before being crowned King of the Jungle and tells new campmates how their lives will change

Carl Fogarty has told his fellow campers this year to expect a life-changing experience, a decade after he was crowned king of the jungle.

The four-time World Superbike champion enjoyed success on the 2014 edition of I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! defeating Jake Quickenden and Melanie Sykes for the title.

As a host of new faces prepare to adjust to life in the jungle, Carl reflected on his own experience and revealed he turned down the show three times before finally saying yes.

This year, Coleen Rooney, Tulisa Contostavlos and Barry McGuigan enter the camp, and Carl warned: “

It was three weeks of hell, I’m not going to say, but… it was a roller coaster of emotions. To meet all the challenges, living on rice and beans and keeping the fire going, continuing to boil the water and meeting people.

He added in conversation with motorcycle insurance broker Bikesure: “I became a real team player and learned a lot about myself. I wasn’t at all sure about getting in, they really had to persuade me to get in.

Carl continued: “I think they wanted the guy who would run, who was angry and determined and focused and wouldn’t like other people and would kick off and all that.”

“But I was never really like that outside of racing, I was just a regular guy from Blackburn.

“I came in thinking that I don’t particularly like other people, that I don’t like celebrities, that I don’t like being bored and that I hate being hungry. These are things I learned from kind of challenged me to see if I could deal with them and I really overcame them really well.

“I was making sure everyone was OK, especially the girls there. I learned a lot about myself, I’m a nicer guy than I thought – Michaela (my wife) said “I never recognized you in that”. It was an incredible experience, it really was.

Revealing that he almost didn’t get into the jungle, he admitted that it took a lot of convincing for him to sign up for the show.

He admitted to saying no, adding: “They came and asked me 15 years ago, right after I had just retired from racing in 2002 and 2003. I said no because I wasn’t in the good state of mind to do it.”

“They came back in 2013 and asked me to do it and I said maybe I would do it next year because my mother wasn’t doing very well and I had to take care of her a little. It took a lot for me to say yes, it really is.

“It would have been easier to say no, but I wanted a challenge and to test myself. King of the Jungle is the coolest title I’ve ever had!’

Carl admitted in a conversation with Bikesure, the motorcycle insurance broker: “I learned a lot about myself. I wasn't sure about going at all, they really had to persuade me to go.

Reflecting on his success on the show, he added: “When I was announced as the winner, I got down on my knees, I was gone, I was so emotional. It felt like I had won the world championship again all those years ago.

“It felt good and I think I said at the time ‘that was kind of the best thing that ever happened to me.’ That’s how it was at the time, but obviously the best thing was running on a motorcycle and become a world champion.

After months of speculation, it has been confirmed that Coleen Rooney will be heading Down Under for the new series, alongside long-running soap star Alan Halsall and sporting legend Barry McGuigan.

The line-up is completed by Strictly Come Dancing pro Oti Mabuse, Loose Women star Jane Moore, DJ Dean McCullough, Tulisa, radio presenter Melvin Odoom and podcast presenter GK Barry.

Stripped of luxury and comfort, the stars will face a series of Bushtucker trials in a bid to win food for the camp, and only one will walk away as king or queen of the jungle.

Maura Higgins and Reverend Richard Coles are also set to appear on the show and are expected to visit the camp later in the series.
