Alfred Woodard’s Her most important role is being a mother to her two children, Mavis and Duncan Spencer.

Woodard shares her children with her longtime husband, writer and producer Roderick Spencer. They have been married for over 40 years and welcomed their daughter and son through adoption.

While speaking to PEOPLE in 2021, Woodward revealed that becoming parents was something that deepened her bond with Spencer.

“At first it was just us and the things we love and what we wanted in the world. Then it was about raising children,” she said. “And now it’s the plan to be a co-partner with our children in their lives.”

Woodard’s children are all grown up now and have successful careers of their own.

Mavis Spencer, 33 years old

Woodard and Spencer welcomed their daughter Mavis Spencer on June 13, 1991.

Today, Mavis is known as an accomplished professional equestrian. She has had a passion for horses since she was a child growing up in California.

“I wasn’t allowed to take lessons until I was five, so on my fifth birthday I ran into my parents’ room at six in the morning begging to ride a horse. My parents found me a barn to ride in and from then on I never gave it up,” Mavis said. Wellington International in 2023.

She has since become a top rider, but she worked hard to get there. After competing as a junior in college, Mavis became a student and groomer for some of the most respected riders in the field.

“It taught me to always do my best and give one hundred percent to every opportunity that comes my way,” she told Wellington International of her work.

Mavis attributes much of her success to her parents: when speaking to Elysian, she explained how dedicated they were to supporting her throughout her riding journey, explaining that although they had tried to leading him to pursue other hobbies and careers, they were ultimately encouraging his dream of horse riding.

The rider has spoken openly about her close relationship with her mother, including on social media.

Duncan Spencer, 31 years old

Woodard and Spencer welcomed their son Duncan Spencer on November 12, 1993.

Unlike his sister, Duncan doesn’t spend much time in the public eye. His Instagram account is private and he doesn’t have a high-profile career like the rest of his family.

However, he attended public events with his mother and family, including The Lion King world premiere in Los Angeles in June 2019.

In her interview with Elysian, Mavis explained how her parents tried to give her and her brother a normal childhood despite their fame, teaching them the importance of hard work.

“My parents really kept us grounded. They made a huge effort for us to grow up as normally as possible, if such a thing exists,” she said.

Mavis also revealed that they taught them, “it’s not who you are, but what you do that’s important in life,” which is why she and Duncan never felt star-struck with which they grew up.

According to Élysée, Duncan is a professional golfer in Arizona.
