Due to globalization and tremendous modernization of society, many changes in lifestyles, diets, environment and reasons for socializing are creating huge complications in the healthcare system. Therefore, the prevalence of diabetes mellitus is also increasing. A well-balanced diet with minimal carbohydrates, high protein and fiber, with plenty of vegetables, sprouts, green leafy vegetables and plenty of fluids helps maintain the blood sugar levels of diabetics.

Along with diet, physical activity plays a major role in maintaining sugar levels. Research indicates that maintaining both regular physical activity and a healthy diet reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease later in life. Studies show that among women, sufficient physical activity decreases by 0.3% per year, while among men it decreases by 0.5% per year. Good blood sugar control doesn’t stop at healthy eating and physical activity. Dr Padmini BV, Head – Clinical Dietitian, Apollo Hospitals, Sheshadripuram, Bangalore guides us through this.

Sleep disorders are also on the rise among uncontrolled diabetics. Meditation, yoga practices and breathing exercises are some techniques to follow to maintain blood sugar levels. The prevalence of early-onset diabetes among younger generations is greater and tends to increase due to lifestyle habits such as late-night entertainment and physical inactivity accompanied by an unhealthy diet. Moderation is therefore the key to alcohol consumption. Avoid smoking, vaping, and chewing tobacco, as this increases the risk of developing cancer in diabetics.

The main causes are increased urbanization, nutritional transition and reduced physical activity and health, which constitute an important part of emotional, mental, social and spiritual well-being in the current scenario. A holistic approach, like healthy diet, active lifestyle with good sleep and developing healthy habits, would always be best to maintain diabetes.
