2 reasons to suggest Lonnie Walker re-signs with the Celtics

Lonnie Walker did not make the Celtics’ opening day roster. However, there are indications that his time in Boston might not be over after all. Jake Fischer from Bleacher Report confirmed that the Celtics could add him this season, although it might not be right away.

Even before Fischer’s latest report on Walker, there were signs that Walker’s time with the Celtics might be coming.

1. Walker was waived after the remainder of training camp

The Celtics waiving Dmytro Skapintsev, Ron Harper Jr., Jay Scrubb and Hason Ward didn’t send shockwaves, but what was notable was that Walker wasn’t waived along with them.

Walker was waived two days later. The Celtics may have delayed his release out of respect, knowing that Walker has legitimate NBA experience under his belt compared to other cuts. However, he had clearly done enough for the Celtics to take their time deciding what to do with him.

While it didn’t surprise anyone that the Celtics cut him, it didn’t make the decision easy for them. The postponement of his release proves it.

2. Walker did not join the Maine Celtics

Walker signed a contract with the Celtics that would pay him a significant amount if he joined the Celtics G-League affiliate for 60 days. This opportunity allows him to make that much money and then convert to a standard NBA contract in Boston.

Alas, the Celtics have announced who is on their Maine roster, and wouldn’t you know it, Walker is not on it.

Perhaps he could join the team at a later date, or this could be a sign that the Celtics told Walker in advance that they had every intention of adding him. It’s just a question of when.

Now, let’s get practical. If that’s the plan, is Walker really willing to wait who knows how long before being added to the active roster? If he is, good for him for having such patience. However, this risks letting other options dry up, which may not be the wisest move if he waits too long.

Walker should be in the NBA, and his addition would give the Celtics reinforcements in their quest to repeat. He could join the Celtics, but expectations need to be kept in check. There has been so much hype surrounding a player who will most likely be part of the famous “Stay Ready” group.
