British Columbia’s dock foremen and women have issued strike notice for Monday, Nov. 4, planning a complete shutdown of Canada’s busiest port, a business group said.

International Longshore and Warehouse Union Ship & Dock Foremen Local 514 provided 72 hours’ notice Thursday, according to an emailed statement from the BC Maritime Employers Association.

The written notice calls for a complete shutdown of BCMEA’s operations at Canada’s west coast ports effective Monday at 8 a.m. Pacific Time. The withdrawal would include Canada’s busiest port – Vancouver.

“We are extremely concerned that this strike could quickly result in the closure of the entire West Coast port system,” said David van Hemmen, vice-president of the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade, adding that the strike puts at risk 800 million Canadian dollars ($574 million) per day. in commerce.

“We call for immediate action from the federal government to intervene,” van Hemmen said in a statement.

The foremen voted in favor of the strike in September. A representative for ILWU Local 514, which represents 730 supervisors and women, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

A 13-day strike by more than 7,000 longshore workers caused widespread disruption at Canada’s west coast ports last year, and the North American transportation and logistics sectors continued to be affected by labor conflicts this year.

In early October, a three-day strike closed all major ports on the East Coast and Gulf of the United States, and dockworkers at the Port of Montreal have also walked off the job in recent days.

Canada’s two largest railways were also temporarily shut down over the summer after negotiations between union leaders and their employers failed.
