Bruno Fernandes’ new role and controversial winger choice – what Jamie Carragher predicts Ruben Amorim’s Man United will look like

Jamie Carragher expects Ruben Amorim to make bold changes to his starting XI when he takes charge of Manchester United.

Amorim arrives with high expectations after impressing as manager of current club Sporting Lisbonwinning the Portuguese Primeira Liga twice in four years with an adventurous setup.

This has led to much speculation about what this could mean for the Red Devilswhich could see an upheaval in its usual composition.

The Portuguese coach is known for favoring a 3-4-3 formation, preferring wingers over full-backs in winger positions.

And old Liverpool defender Carragher boldly suggested that the winger Alexandre Garnacho could be the man to fill one of these roles.

Appearing on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, the pundit gave his expected starting XI under Amorim, which saw him place Garnacho and full-back Noussair Mazraoui on either side of a midfield four.

Explaining his choice, Carragher said: “I almost put an attacking fullback on one side and Garnacho on the other.

“Because when you look at his setup at Sporting Lisbon, sometimes these players are asked to be very high, as well as the wingers, and they are going to have to be good in 1v1.

“And again, that means Manchester United are dominating with the ball, perhaps at Old Trafford.”

The former England international admitted that this selection could have certain pitfalls against strong attacking opposition.

Carragher highlighted United’s move to Arsenal December 4: “When you look at the schedule, very early on, I think they knocked out Arsenal.

He added: “It will be an interesting decision. If you have Garnacho and he starts well, maybe in the left-back role.

“But you play against (Bukayo) saka and Arsenal are dominating, and they are at home and they are up front, and Garnacho is asked to play as left back.

However, Carragher’s expert colleague, former Man United striker Dimitar Berbatovquestioned this idea by simply saying, “No, no.”

He continued: “I don’t think it’s going to work.

“Garnacho to defend, I don’t think he’s going to like that. Maybe (Luke) Shaw, let’s say, if Shaw is fit enough.

That wasn’t the only big call in Carragher’s planned starting lineup, as his back three didn’t see room for either. Harry Maguire.

Instead, he opted for a summer signing Matthijs de Ligt as a central defender, with Lisandro Martinez And Leny Yoro, £52m signing on either side of him.

Carragher admitted he could not foresee Maguire and de Ligt playing together in defense, as he explained: “I actually think Martinez in that position, (it) might suit him. (It) gives you that balance with a left foot.

He continued: “I don’t think De Ligt or Maguire could play in the same back three because whoever was in the wide position would be really exposed.

YoroHe arrived as a young player, it’s a project for the club. He is only 18 years old. You would want to work with him, bring him in. (He’s a) young player, he can probably handle the pace on the wings as well. “

Elsewhere in Carragher’s new XI, captain Bruno Fernandes was part of a front trio, with Rasmus Hojlund center forward and Marcus Rashford to his left.

Despite usually operating as an attacking midfielder, Fernandes was pushed forward, while Manuel Ugarte, who played under Amorim at Sporting between 2021 and 2023, and Kobbie Mainoo took on both midfield roles central.
