Harry Enten, CNN’s senior political reporter, suggested Wednesday that “the signs will always have been obvious” if former President Donald Trump wins the 2024 election.

Enten cited voter satisfaction polls about the direction of the country, President Joe Biden’s current poor approval rating, and Republican registration numbers as key factors that could, in hindsight, be used to explain a victory for Trump.

Parties in power since 1980 have been re-elected when approval ratings for the direction the country is heading are around 42 percent, Enten said. Outgoing parties lose on average around 25%. The current average is 28%.

“I traced the story. There is not a single moment where 28% of the American public thinks that the country is on the right track and that the party in power has actually won,” Enten explained.

Biden’s low approval rating, based on historical data, is also not good news for Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, Enten said. And the “large number” of new voters Republicans are registering in the battleground states of Arizona, Nevada, North Carolina and Pennsylvania could also be a critical factor.

If Trump wins, “the signs will be obvious from the beginning,” he said.

“We would consider the good leadership to be very weak, Joe Biden’s approval rating to be very low and the Republicans to actually be putting up numbers,” he added. “You can’t say you weren’t warned.”

Enten promised to provide a similar analysis of the signs that could point to a Harris victory on Thursday.
