Jahmyr Gibbs reveals which teams wanted to draft him before the Lions in the 2023 draft

Jahmyr Gibbs was almost a Dallas Cowboy.

Well, at least he would have been if he had been available with the 26th pick in the NFL Draft. But he had left long before.

Gibbs said on The Richard Sherman Podcast that the Cowboys were one of the few teams to inform him of their desire to make him a surprise first-round pick before the Lions beat everyone to the punch at #12.

When asked if he planned to go to Detroit, he said, “No, I didn’t.” I knew they liked me, but you know, when you go to visit, it seems like they all like you.

According to Gibbs, the Cincinnati Bengals have said they will trade for the dynamic running back if he falls into his late teens.

“I knew for a fact that Dallas was going to get me at 26 if I was still there,” Gibbs continued, “and a few other places like Cincinnati were going to get me. I think they were going to trade down at around 18 or something around that range, but I didn’t think I was going to go to 12, I’m not going to lie.

Lions general manager Brad Holmes received plenty of criticism on this 2023 draft night.

Among a certain cohort of recruiting experts, there is a firmly held belief that running back is an easily replaceable position and, therefore, not worth spending high-end recruiting capital.

Many have argued that Gibbs would have been available in the second round since that’s where the consensus committees placed him, a theory Holmes argued against on draft night. The Lions had the sixth and 18th picks heading into draft night, but moved back six spots on their first pick and ended up selecting the 12th and 18th.

“We were thinking maybe (selecting Gibbs) at 18,” Holmes said on draft night. “But we didn’t feel good about it, and so when we were able to draft him at 12, that’s when all the texts started coming in like, ‘Oh, he would have disappeared at 15 years.’ Just a lot of choices, a lot of people saying they want to trade, they want to have him. I wouldn’t have felt good about him staying at 18.

After reaching the Pro Bowl in his rookie season, Gibbs has 727 rushing yards and 202 receiving yards with eight total touchdowns in nine games in 2024.

He set an NFL record for most consecutive games (seven) with a yards per carry average of 5.0 or better (min. 10 attempts) from Weeks 2 to 9 before the streak ended against the Houston Texans last Sunday. He ranks second in yards per carry (6.0) behind Derrick Henry (Baltimore Ravens, 6.1).

In a 47-9 win over the Dallas Cowboys last month, Gibbs had 63 rushing yards and 28 receiving yards.
