I didn’t think I’d be emotional following another playthrough of Dragon Quest 3, of all games. It’s decades old, has sold millions of copies, and has already been remade twice. The “HD-2D” look this time around may be very well done, but it’s not unique. I thought it would be another round reheated with something inoffensively retro and pleasantly familiar, as quickly erased as subsequently forgotten.

But I became emotional. This game, a place where the sun’s warm rays pass through verdant forests, where purple poisons stain the earth, and where gaps in the crumbling masonry of an ancient tower offer glimpses of the lush grasses far below, finally feels like what it gives my RPG lover. heart feeling. The sense of innocent wonder conveyed by the new perspective, combined with fantastic attention to detail – colorful banners hung around a peaceful town, the sea catching the light at sunset, flowers blooming by the side of a path stony – make pixel art look alive. this has never been the case before.
