Sheringham appoints Man Utd star, Amorim must get involved ‘very quickly’ if he is to succeed

Man Utd legend Teddy Sheringham believes new head coach Ruben Amorim needs to get Marcus Rashford into his side “very, very quickly” in order to succeed at Old Trafford.

Amorim was appointed on November 1 after the Red Devils sacked Erik ten Hag earlier in the week, while he had to wait until last Monday to start his job after managing his last Sporting Lisbon match against Braga before the break international.

And now Amorim can get to work repairing Man Utd with the Red Devils currently 13th Premier League standings after a disastrous start to the season.

Ten Hag’s side won three of their first nine Premier League matches before caretaker boss Ruud van Nistelrooy put four more points on the board in their last two matches.

Rashford has underperformed since the 2022/23 seasonas he has scored 30 goals in all competitions, and Sheringham believes it is vital that Amorim get the Man Utd striker involved and firing to have a successful debut campaign.

Sheringham said Best Offshore Sports Betting: “I look at these United players, and maybe I don’t know it or I don’t think it, but they need to be managed. Marcus Rashford must look at a manager and think: “I like the way he talks; I like his vibe, I understand exactly what he wants and we need to go out and do it. I will lead from the front.

“The young players then looked at Rashford and thought: ‘If you want to show me how it’s done, I’ll follow you too.’ Come on, let’s all go together.

“He needs to have the best players on his side very, very quickly.

“Rashford is your main role model because everyone looks to him. He’s the one who’s going to score your goals, who’s going to score goals, and he’s the one people look at and say, ‘He’s not there, is he?’

“So he has to involve him and make him take the lead from the front. He’s not a young boy anymore. He is an experienced player. It’s funny how quickly you go from a young kid to an experienced, ever-present player. All of a sudden you’re experienced, you look around the locker room and you’re expected to lead.

“He’s played many times for England and he should be leading up front and he’s not doing that at Man United. That needs to change. He needs to get the best players in his side very, very quickly.

When asked how promising Amorim’s victory over Man City in the Champions League was, Sheringham replied: “Without a doubt, that comprehensive victory over Manchester City was a promising sign.

“I don’t think it means much overall when Manchester City play Man United because he has a lot of work to do for them to perform like Sporting did.

“It’s not unachievable. It’s a difficult task to get everyone together and have them work exactly the way you want them to. That’s why they went for him because they looked at all the Sporting players and they all play out of their skin. They are playing at the top of their game.

“You look at Manchester United and ask me what players you need to start. It’s every one of them. You can look at each of these players and go, none of them are performing up to their abilities.

“None of them are 10 out of 10 every week. The best you can get is probably a 7.5 or 8 out of 10 every few weeks, but that’s not good enough. Amorim will want each player to do their part, then as a team, collectively, it makes you even better and stronger. That’s what he’ll be looking for, for the team to function as a unit.

On Amorim’s short-term goal, Sheringham added: “It will be very, very obvious whether Amorim got it right in the first place.” Work ethic is the main thing.

“He needs to establish this cohesion in the team. He needs the players to all work in unison. To do this, he will need to be a good communicator, able to put his arguments across to his players and help them understand what he demands of them as a manager.

“If he had that impact, you should see an immediate spark in the team and the way he plays.

“In terms of new recruits, the money has potentially been spent. Amorim inherits what is essentially Ten Hag’s team, there will be guys in there he doesn’t want, so it will take time to build the team he wants. I would love to see United be ambitious and try to make some exciting signings in January if they have the budget to do so.
