The Onion buys Alex Jones Infowars, plans to turn it into a ‘cosmic joke’

Satirical news site The onion won the tender to acquire the assets of Alex Jones Information warswith the support of the families of Sandy Hook.

The site acquired Infowars after their auction bid was selected by the court-appointed bankruptcy trustee overseeing Free Speech Systems’ bankruptcy proceedings. Everytown for Gun Safety, the nation’s largest gun violence prevention organization, will serve as the site’s exclusive launch advertiser under the new venture.

The Onion’s goal in acquiring the site was “to end Infowars’ incessant barrage of misinformation for the sole purpose of selling supplements and replace it for good with The Onion’s incessant barrage of humor.” the company said in a press release. Financial details of the offer were not disclosed.

The publication plans to launch the new platform in January 2025.

“The Onion has a long history of helping the American public navigate some of the most difficult moments in American life, from our historic post-9/11 problem to our groundbreaking reporting after every mass shooting in the United States. In that tradition, we hope the families of Sandy Hook can marvel at the cosmic joke we’ll soon make on InfoWars.com,” said Ben Collins, CEO of The Onion.

The bankruptcy proceedings were the result of the defamation lawsuit filed by the Sandy Hook victims’ families against Jones. Jones had claimed the 2012 school shooting was a “hoax” and was staged by actors. Several families successfully sued Jones for defamation and emotional damages and won a $1.4 billion defamation lawsuit in 2022 against Mr. Jones and his company, Free Speech Systems. Jones declared bankruptcy in 2022, leading to the sale of its assets to pay its creditors.

“It’s fitting that a platform once used to profit from tragedy becomes a tool for education, hence our multi-year advertising commitment to this new venture,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety. “We are proud to be a part of what comes next, not only in terms of stemming the flow of hurtful misinformation, but also the potential of this new venture to help Everytown reach new audiences ready to stand up to the gun industry responsible for his contribution to the epidemic of gun violence in our country.
