Pat Truman: Readers deserve better information

If the public expects to hear both sides of a controversial issue, the Kennebec Journal did not deliver on its promises this time.

Transgender advocates made headlines (“Maine Transgender Advocates Vow to Fight Despite Trump,” Nov. 16) – as well as three full columns on the inside pages, regarding their LGBTQ+ concerns. Additionally, there was a separate article (two full columns) at the back of the first section.

Yet a few weeks ago, a young girl at Mount Desert Island High School was brutally attacked by a muscular transgender student, who weighed about 100 pounds. And outside of another alternative news source (“The Maine Wire”), there has been no mention of this incident. Zero coverage! This was true not only for the KJ, but also for other media. I’m still holding my breath waiting to read anything about this attack.

Conversely, if it had been the other way around – a high school jock attacking a shorter transgender student – it would have been all over the media! The cover would have been phenomenal!

Does the term “biased reporting” come to mind? The general public is finally beginning to realize this fact and is now more aware of the media’s policy of “selective information”. We deserve and have the right to better information.
