FORT CAVAZOS, Texas — Leaders from III Armored Corps and Fort Cavazos gathered alongside local law enforcement, including Police Chief Pedro Lopez Jr., Killeen Police Department, at III Armored Corps Headquarters to launch the “Buckle Up for Safety” campaign on November 1.

This national initiative, organized to raise awareness of the dangers of impaired driving, encourages drivers to display red ribbons on their vehicles as a symbol of their commitment to making safe and responsible choices during the holiday season.

Lt. Gen. Kevin D. Admiral, commanding general of III Armored Corps and Fort Cavazos, and Command Sgt. Maj. John P. McDwyer, command sergeant major of III Armored Corps and Fort Cavazos, led the event in signing a pledge to strengthen the Corps’ commitment to highway safety. After the signing, leaders and law enforcement officials came out to tie red ribbons on their vehicles, symbolizing their promise to make safe choices on the road.

“This campaign contains a powerful message,” the admiral said. “We can all make a difference when it comes to preventing impaired driving through small actions, thoughtful choices and collective responsibility. We have the power to protect lives and make our roads safer
for everyone. »

The admiral emphasized that the red ribbon is more than just a decoration.

“It represents a promise,” he said. “A promise to ourselves, our families and our communities that we will make responsible choices. »

Lopez, who has witnessed the consequences of drunk driving, echoed that sentiment.

“Supporting this initiative reflects my strong commitment to preserving the well-being of the community and taking proactive measures to prevent traffic tragedies,” Lopez said. “Having seen the devastating impact that impaired driving can have on families, I feel deeply compelled to promote safety programs that save lives.

Both Lopez and Admiral emphasized the shared responsibility of ensuring roadways are safe, especially during the holiday season.

“Every passenger, pedestrian and driver deserves to return home safely,” the admiral said. “Whether it’s designating a sober driver, calling for a ride, or reminding a friend not to drive impaired, these actions save lives. We all have a role to play.

Lopez added that the campaign reinforces the KPD’s proactive approach to security.

“Our involvement amplifies important safety messages and encourages responsible behavior that can prevent tragic incidents on the road,” he said. “This proactive approach not only deters impaired driving, but also strengthens the bond between law enforcement and the community, making Killeen a safer place for everyone.” »

The Admiral closed the event by thanking the campaign partners, volunteers and law enforcement who support the initiative.

“As we leave here today and enter the holiday season, let us carry with us the message of this campaign,” he said. “Let’s make responsible decisions, encourage others to do the same and never underestimate the impact of our actions.

“Together, we can ensure that the joy of the season is not overshadowed by tragedy,” the admiral continued. “Thank you all for being here and for your commitment to safety. Let’s continue to raise awareness, promote responsibility and work towards a future where everyone can enjoy the holidays safely.
