‘Wheel of Fortune’ Fans Debate Price Conundrums ‘Disappointment’ — Is the Show Cutting Costs?

For all skills involved in solving Wheel of Fortune riddles (without embarrass yourself on national television), there is certainly an element of chance in the syndicated game show. And fans think some Prize Puzzle prizes are turning out to be disappointments.

“Imagine continuing WOF and win the coveted Prize Puzzle, and you can’t wait to find out whether you’re going to the Turks and Caicos or Barcelona or (on) an Alaskan cruise, only to hear (announcer) Jim (Thornton) “I’m telling you you’re going to Salem, MA, or Savannah, GA,” one fan wrote in a new Reddit thread. “Nothing against those places, but come on, it’s a road trip for half the candidates.”

This fan wondered if “road trip” destinations were a way for producers to recoup money after giving away big prizes — or if producers were “just cutting back on spending this year.”

When a commenter said that “both of these cities are great vacation destinations,” the original responded, “Absolutely, they are.” I love Salem personally, but I rarely travel and even I’ve been there. I’m just saying that if I won this trip, but a few days earlier someone won a trip to Greece, that would be a little disappointing.

Another fan agreed. “My husband and I laugh on every trip to the United States,” they wrote. “(I have) the same thought, I hope the winner doesn’t live within three or four hours of the venue.”

One commenter said he lived an hour from Salem and listed some of the historic Massachusetts city’s tourist attractions, including the Peabody Essex Museum and local whale-watching tours. “But winning a trip there against the Caribbean, Alaska or Europe? Too bad,” they added.

Other fans disagreed, with one saying they would be “thrilled” to win a vacation to the so-called Lower 48. “Either guy Destination means a fancy hotel room, entertainment and food, but overseas destinations mean losing a few. days to travel by plane,” they argued. “I prefer to minimize my travel time and maximize my relaxation.”

Someone else wrote: “I’m sure many of these contestants are happy to win a paid trip almost anywhere.” And how many have a passport or can take time off work or even pay taxes on their earnings? Heck, I travel several times a year (for fun, not work), and there are countless places here in the US that I’ve never been to and would love to win a trip to.

Would you be thrilled to win a vacation to the continental United States in the Prize Puzzle? Let us know in the comments!
