A look around the Thanksgiving Dinner table and you’re unlikely to miss the turkey. Around this time, many Americans rush to their grocery stores to buy frozen turkey. It is important to know that preparing fresh turkey is different from frozen turkey. Here are 9 things to keep in mind before buying a frozen turkey:

1) Fresh or frozen

The debate between fresh and frozen meat is still unresolved. Many people now prefer frozen turkey because it is frozen right after processing. A method called deep chilling is used to cool meat before being frozen. This helps maintain the freshness of the meat. Identifying the type of meat you need is one of the first steps.

2) Read the labels

You can look for labels or certifications on frozen turkey indicating cruelty-free practices. Some common labels are “Global Animal Partnership” or “animal welfare approved’. This is especially important if you are concerned about the animal’s welfare. Always check the USDA markings that indicate the quality of the turkey.

3) Offal inside

With some turkeys, sellers keep a bag of giblets inside. This might come as a surprise if you’re cooking turkey for the first time. Using the giblets is optional but can be used to make a rich gravy with the turkey.

4) Choose your type

You can choose the type of frozen turkey according to your schedule and preparation mood. You can buy a semi-cooked or even fully cooked frozen turkey, ready to defrost and baste.

5) Shape and size of the bird

If this is your first time cooking a turkey, it is recommended to buy a well-rounded bird. Additionally, consider the size of the bird based on the number of family members or friends. As a general rule, you can consider 1 pound per person.

6) Avoid packaging with holes

Make sure your turkey is properly packaged and that the package has no holes or tears. Holes can cause discoloration or become a hub for bacteria when the defrosting process begins.

7) Calendar

There is no hard and fast rule as to when frozen turkey should be purchased. However, as a general rule, buy the turkey a week before cooking it. Frozen turkey may take some time to thaw, usually between 4 and 5 days. If necessary, wash the turkey only in cold water.

8) Storage

While this may seem like an obvious step, make sure your turkey has plenty of space in the freezer. The meat needs enough security to thaw completely and soak up its juices.

9) Brining

To ensure your turkey will be juicy, make sure it is brined. Make sure the turkey has not been seasoned before doing this. After defrosting, prepare a hot water bath for the turkey with sugar and salt and let it cool before placing the turkey in it.

Preparing fresh turkey may be different than preparing frozen turkey. However, the difference in preparations should not hamper Thanksgiving celebrations. There can be a lot of pressure on the right way to prepare and cook turkey. Keep these things in mind and you’re ready for a traditional feast!
