American Airlines expands anti-door lice technology to 100 airports

Key takeaways

  • American Airlines is expanding testing of new technology to more than 100 airports after obtaining “initial insights into ways to improve the boarding process.”
  • The trial, which began last month at three airports, produces a sound to alert gate agents when people attempt to board before their group is called.
  • The new technology could help reduce “gate lice,” or people circling boarding gates well before their group’s boarding time.

It is increasingly time for the “door lice” to disperse.

American airlines (AAL) is expanding the trial of new technology to more than 100 airports after obtaining “initial insights into ways to improve the boarding process.”

The trial, which started last month at three airports, produces a sound to alert gate agents when people attempt to board before their group is called.

The new technology could help reduce “gate lice,” or people circling boarding gates well before their group’s boarding time.

American says the technology ensures “customers can enjoy the benefits of their assigned boarding group”

In a press release announcing the update Wednesday, American said only that it was extending the trial “to ensure customers can enjoy the benefits of their assigned boarding group.”

Julie Rath, U.S. senior vice president of airport operations, reservations and service recovery, said the carrier received very good feedback following the initial trial, launched at Albuquerque International Sunport in New Mexico; Tucson International Airport in Arizona; and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.

“The initial positive response from customers and team members has exceeded our expectations. So we’re excited to leverage this technology to respond to them before the Thanksgiving holiday,” Rath said.
