OpenAI seems to target another key aspect of Googlethe company, with apparent plans to build a internet browser to compete with Chrome.

You won’t get any points for guessing that OpenAI’s creation would, of course, be a heavily AI-infused version of a browser client. According to a report from The informationOpenAI is considering the development of a web browser that would be combined with ChatGPT.

We don’t yet know exactly what this browser might look like, and judging by what’s in the report, it’s still early days – and it’s a “could happen” possibility. or “might not” at this point.

However, even though the report clearly states that OpenAI is not yet “close” to launching a browser, things are happening in the background, which is enough evidence that OpenAI is taking this potential product launch seriously.

For starters, The Information has learned that OpenAI hired two staff members who were “instrumental” in the creation of Chromium for Google, namely Ben Goodger and Darin Fisher.

The report also claims that in addition to considering its browser, OpenAI has spoken with several companies, or even struck deals with some, to “power search functionality for travel, food, real estate websites and retail. That’s word from people who have seen prototypes or designs related to this work, and we’re told that OpenAI has spoken to a number of companies about these research products, including Condé Nast, Redfin, Eventbrite and Priceline.

In addition to this, there is another claim that OpenAI has been in discussions with Samsung on introducing its AI features to Galaxy smartphones – and on strengthening Google, which has a deal with Samsung to drive some AI features with its Gemini AI (although Samsung has its own AI concoction in the form of BixbyAlso).

Analysis: imposing ambitions

So, will OpenAI go for Google’s throat? Well, that seems to be the case given this latest information and previous moves, such as OpenAI launches SearchGPTa rival search engine product put into testing earlier this year (with the expectation that it will be fully realized in ChatGPT before the end of the year).

The information also highlights how OpenAI is pushing its “Natural Language Web” to power conversational search features on websites (or apps) to radically change the way a person interacts with a site – by talking to them rather than while browsing the website.

Okay, a lot of this is still under discussion, and in the form of projects that are happening in the background that may or may not happen – especially the browser, which seems really airy. We are not given any details about how this AI-based browser works.

If a browser comes along, development would of course be a very long road – it’s a huge job to get a software client like this going. But even if this ends up being just a theory and a musing, it clearly shows the intent and scope of the well-funded ambition that’s buzzing behind OpenAI’s doors.

Certainly, Google is aware of the dangers that exist here, and the report mentions that the company is preparing for the possibility of having to compete with OpenAI to power the AI features of Samsung phones, according to a source with knowledge of what’s going on behind the scenes . NOW.

Meanwhile, Google is rumored to be working hard to try to make Gemini more closely mimics a human’s reasoning ability in the style of ChatGPT.
