Man, 24, arrested on murder charges after woman dies after stabbing in Manhattan on Tuesday

MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) – A man was arrested on first-degree murder charges after a person died from stabbings Tuesday morning in southwest Manhattan, officials said.

The victim in the death was identified by Riley County police officials as Tabatha Deer, 24, of Mountain Home, Ark.

THE stabbings were reported around 11:36 a.m. Tuesday in the 3000 block of Arbor Drive in Manhattan.

Riley County police officials said Deer was taken by ambulance to Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan before being flown to Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka.

Officials said Deer died after being transferred to Stormont Vail.

The suspect in this case has been identified as Hunter Logan Smith, 24, of Manhattan.

Authorities said Smith was arrested around 11:51 a.m. Tuesday at the scene of the stabbing before also being transported to Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka for treatment of his injuries.

Riley County police officials told 13 NEWS that Smith remained in Stormont Vail Wednesday morning, but was expected to be released later in the day “barring a major change in his health.” .

Officials said that after his release from the hospital, Smith is expected to be booked into the Riley County Jail later Wednesday.

Authorities said Smith was formally arrested on a charge of first-degree murder and a $1 million bond was issued.

Tuesday’s killing was the second homicide reported in Manhattan in the past three weeks.

Don Stovall, 58, was shot and killed around 8:45 p.m. on Saturday, October 19, in the 700 block of N. 4th Street on the east side of Manhattan. Two people were arrested in connection with Stovall’s death.

Additional details about the latest homicide in Manhattan were not available Wednesday afternoon.
