1 dead in house explosion in southern Jordan

SOUTH JORDAN — One person was found dead after an explosion ignited a house in the neighborhood Wednesday afternoon.

South Jordan firefighters were called to a house fire near 10500 South and 3200 West around 3 p.m. Deputy Fire Chief Ryan Lessner said some sort of explosion appeared to have started the fire.

Flames and smoke could be seen coming from the roof of the building as residents looked out in the cold.

Interview with South Jordan Deputy Fire Chief Ryan Lessner and Chopper 5 video of the house.

Lessner said resources from across the county were on scene to help fight the fire. The house suffered significant damage and two neighboring houses also appeared to have minor damage from the explosion.

A family member was missing and after several hours of searching, a person was found dead inside the home shortly before 10 p.m., officials in South Jordan said.

The person’s name and age were not immediately released.

Adjacent homes were evacuated as a precaution, Lessner said. Investigators are present in the neighborhood to try to reconstruct the causes of the explosion.
