Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez supports Sarah McBride against GOP pettiness

Imagine being so dedicated to equality and basic human rights that you become press secretary for the largest LGBTQ lobbying organization at the age of 26. That same year, you made history as the first trans person to speak at the Democratic National Convention. At 31, you are the first openly trans person in a state Senate. At 34, you’re breaking another barrier as the first openly trans member of Congress.

Now imagine arriving at the United States Capitol to do the job you were elected to do, and then encountering the cruelty of narrow-minded people more interested in demeaning others than serving their voters. This is the reality Sarah McBride faces as she continues her groundbreaking career in public service.

For House Speaker Mike Johnson – pushed by Nancy Mace – passing a bathroom bill targeting McBride is simply disgusting. Each member of Congress has a private restroom. It’s not a question of practicality; this is about Republicans using their power to demean a trans woman and perpetuate their petty, authoritarian agendas. But Sarah McBride holds her head high and remains focused on the work she was elected to do: helping Americans.

Thank God for Sarah McBride. And thank God for Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who refuses to let these attacks go unanswered. AOC is calling out this resolution for what it really is: a crude, opportunistic ploy designed to raise money against fear and discrimination.

AOC fights Nancy Mace for targeting Sarah McBride.

“They’re doing this so Nancy Mace can…raise money from an email. They’re not doing this to protect people. They’re putting women in danger, they’re putting girls in danger of all kinds .And everyone should reject it. “.

“This inevitably results in women and girls who are willing to be assaulted because people will want to check their private parts to suspect who is trans, who is cis and who is doing what,” AOC said. “And so the idea that Nancy Mace wants little girls and women to cause trouble in front of whom? An investigator? Who would it be?

“Because she wants to suspect and point fingers at those she thinks are trans? It is disgusting.”

We need more leaders like AOC in the Democratic Party: fiery voices who unapologetically defend working-class values, speak honestly to their constituents, and stand up to bullies (and who don’t rely on a team of managers to write their message).

(*Why is it that when Democrats defend the working class, they call it “online Marxist leftism”, but when Republicans do the same, they call it political moderates and salt of the earth?)

She’s a badass woman defending another badass woman. If we are to survive the next four years, we will need more of it. And no, Elissa Slotkin, it’s not about identity politics. It’s about ensuring that everyone has the same dignity, especially in a workplace where everyone has been elected to serve alongside everyone else in that room.
