Elwood Edwards is dead. You may not know his name, but if you’re old enough, you’ve probably heard his voice thousands of times.

A software startup asked Edwards to record three sentences on a tape recorder in his living room in 1989. The company paid him $250 for his troubles. The phrases were “file downloaded”, “goodbye” and the one you will probably remember the most: the famous “You have mail!” » from AOL!

He died of an undisclosed illness. Elwood Edwards was 75 years old.
