Meta-owned WhatsApp banned over 85 lakh ‘bad’ accounts in India in the month of September.

Between September 1 and September 30, the company banned 8,584,000 accounts and 1,658,000 of those accounts were proactively banned, prior to any user reporting, according to the social media platform’s monthly Compliance Report. new IT rules 2021.

The popular mobile messaging platform, which has over 600 million users in India, received 8,161 complaints from the country, and the number of ‘actioned’ was 97. The ‘Acted’ count refers to complaints for which WhatsApp has taken corrective measures.

WhatsApp also received two orders from the country’s grievance appeal committee and complied with both, according to its monthly compliance report.

“We will continue to be transparent in our work and include information about our efforts in future reports,” the company said. It employs a team of engineers, data scientists, analysts, researchers and experts in law enforcement, online security and technology development to oversee these efforts.

“We allow users to block contacts and report problematic content and contacts to us from within the app. We pay close attention to user feedback and work with experts to stem misinformation, promote cybersecurity, and preserve integrity elections,” WhatsApp said.

Abuse detection works at three stages of an account’s lifestyle: during registration, during messaging, and in response to negative feedback, which we receive in the form of user reports and blocks.

A team of analysts complements these systems to evaluate edge cases and help improve our efficiency over time.

Between August 1, 2024 and August 31, 2024, 8,458,000 WhatsApp accounts were banned, including 1,661,000 proactively, before any user reporting.

It also received 10,707 complaints from the country in August, and the number of “action taken” stood at 93.
